Estuarine flooding risk

Background

Coastal flooding is a serious hazard to the UK. Many communities and infrastructures are located near the sea, especially by estuaries (river mouths).

They are susceptible to compound floods (high flood in river that occurs the same time with high tide and storm surges). The problem is particularly relevant in the context of climate change.

In the scope

The issue chosen is relevant to CDE22's topics:

  • Enganging with uncertainty
  • Climate change
  • Worst-case scenarios
  • Environmental quality

Data source

  • BODC tide
  • EA, NRW and SEPA river flow
  • ERA5 Storm wind and wave

Tools

  • Python with access to API (SEPA, Copernicus, Hydrology API). Note: the river flow data is likely to be short
  • Python mapping service

Deliverables

  • Visualisation of "hot-spots": estuary in high risk
  • Allowing some user interactivity
